The project entitled Rituals and artistic wheat floats. Research and studies towards a network application dossier for inclusion in the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, winner of the Campania Region Call (BURC n° 48 on July 16th 2018), is the positive outcome of a journey started in 2015 when the municipalities of Fontanarosa, Flumeri, Mirabella Eclano, Villanova del Battista, San Marco dei Cavoti, Foglianise and Jelsi signed a protocol of understanding and held a subsequent Convention (Municipality of Fontanarosa No. 427 / REG. N° 130/Sector 1° – General Affairs, 20/09/2016), during which they entrusted a feasibility study to the University of Naples Suor Orsola Benincasa for the preparation of a proposal for a network application for the registration of traditional festivals related to the wheat cycle between Campania and Molise on the UNESCO Intangible Heritage List.
The first study, conducted by the Suor Orsola Benincasa University Anthropology Lab of Marino Niola and Elisabetta Moro, coordinated and directed by the anthropologist Helga Sanità, led, among other results, to the registration of the wheat festivals characteristic of Irpinia and Sannio in the IPIC inventory of the Campania Region.
The new regional funding (CUP D66C18000330002) has made it possible to intensify research on these particular rituals involving the communities concerned, to complete the scheduling of holidays for national inventories, to organize study days and an international conference, to produce scientific publications and popular materials, to create the website www.festedelgrano.net, and finally to outline the application documentation to be submitted to UNESCO for consideration.
